Young New Zealand baritone Angus Simmons is establishing himself as a compelling and versatile presence on the operatic stage. Known for his warm, resonant tone and vivid characterisations, he brings both musical refinement and dramatic immediacy to a wide-ranging repertoire.
A graduate of the University of Canterbury, Simmons was named a 2019 Emerging Artist with New Zealand Opera. He subsequently continued his studies in Italy with Professor Sherman Lowe in Treviso.
From 2022 to 2025, Simmons was a member of the ensemble at the Mittelsächsisches Theater in Freiberg. Since the 2025/26 season, he has been a member of the ensemble at the Eduard von Winterstein Theater in Annaberg-Buchholz.
His principal operatic repertoire includes Figaro (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni), Prinz Stefan (Die gelbe Lilie), Dancaïro (Carmen), Marullo (Rigoletto), Masetto (Don Giovanni), Jan Janicki (Der Bettelstudent), and Dr. Cajus (Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor).
His portrayal of Don Giovanni attracted particular critical attention. Werner Häußer wrote of his “decisive attack and virile brilliance,” describing the role as “a burst of pure energy,” while also highlighting his ability to move between seductive lyrical nuance and “brutal dramatic aggression.” Other reviewers described the interpretation as a “successful debut,” noting his “well-focused vocal line and agile stage presence,” and remarking on the effectiveness of his characterisation.
In Die gelbe Lilie, critics praised his “noble tone and elegant, cavalier-like presence” (Lajos Biró, Die Deutsche Bühne), while Karin Coper (Klassik.com) noted his “striking stage presence and noble vocal quality” as Prinz Stefan. He was also described as “a perfectly matching counterweight through his cavalier-baritonal elegance.”
His performances have been met with consistent acclaim, with emphasis on his combination of vocal security, stylistic intelligence, and strong theatrical instinct.
With a repertoire spanning opera and musical theatre, Simmons distinguishes himself as a dynamic young artist to watch on the European stage.
